Testing & Functional Assessments

Understanding Your Health More Clearly

Testing can offer valuable insight into how your body is functioning beneath the surface. In naturopathic care, testing is used thoughtfully and selectively. It is used not as a one-size-fits-all approach, but to help identify patterns, root contributors, and areas where targeted support may be helpful.

Not everyone needs testing. When recommended, it is always discussed individually and chosen based on your symptoms, health history, assessment and goals.

A Thoughtful, Individualized Approach to Testing

Testing is never ordered routinely or automatically. My goal is to:

  • Use the right test at the right time
  • Avoid unnecessary testing
  • Ensure results are clearly explained and meaningfully applied

 My Philosophy on Testing

  • We don’t test everything – we test what’s relevant
  • Results are interpreted functionally, not just “normal vs abnormal”
  • Testing supports a plan – it doesn’t replace clinical judgment
  • You’re never pressured into testing

Sometimes the most powerful next step is testing. Other times, we start with clinical care and lifestyle changes first.

Do I Need Testing to Get Started?

No. Many patients begin care without any testing. Decisions around testing are made collaboratively after your initial visit.

Common Tests I May Use:

Bloodwork (Comprehensive Laboratory Testing)

Bloodwork provides a direct look at key health markers including hormones, metabolic function, blood counts, liver and kidney function, cholesterol, and nutrient levels. It is commonly used to monitor overall health, investigate fatigue, hormone imbalances, digestive concerns, and metabolic or chronic conditions. Results are interpreted in the context of your health history and clinical findings to guide individualized care.

Urinalysis

Urinalysis can offer insight into hydration status, kidney function, metabolic patterns, and markers of inflammation or infection. It may be used as part of a broader assessment when clinically appropriate.

Food Sensitivity Testing (IgG)

Food sensitivity testing measures immune reactions to a variety of foods that may contribute to inflammation, digestive symptoms, headaches, skin concerns, joint pain and more. Results are used to guide individualized dietary strategies, not create permanent food restriction.

I use Rocky Mountain Analytical Food Sensitivity Testing when appropriate.

DUTCH Hormone Testing

The DUTCH (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) test provides a detailed look at hormone production, metabolism, and daily cortisol patterns. It can be helpful when exploring concerns related to menstrual cycles, perimenopause, menopause, fertility, stress, sleep, and energy.

Organic Acids Test (OAT)

The OAT provides insight into metabolic function, nutrient needs, gut microbial activity, and detoxification pathways. It can be useful when exploring fatigue, brain fog, mood concerns, and digestive symptoms.

Hair Mineral Analysis

Hair mineral analysis assesses mineral patterns and potential imbalances over time. While not diagnostic on its own, it can provide supportive information when looking at stress patterns, energy, and metabolic balance.

Heavy Metal Testing

Heavy metal testing may be considered when there is concern about environmental exposures or symptoms that suggest impaired detoxification. Results are interpreted cautiously and always within the context of the full clinical picture.

A Note About Testing

The tests listed here are some of the tools I commonly use in practice, but this list is not exhaustive. Additional tests may be considered on a patient-by-patient basis, depending on individual health concerns, symptoms, and clinical needs. All testing is selected thoughtfully to support personalized care and guide practical, effective treatment plans.

Not sure what testing (if any) is right for you?

Is laboratory testing covered by OHIP?

No. Laboratory testing is not covered by OHIP and must be paid for by the patient at the time of service. Receipts are provided for submission to your private insurance for potential reimbursement, depending on your plan.

Can Naturopathic doctors order laboratory tests?

Yes. As a registered naturopathic doctor in Ontario, I can requisition certain laboratory tests within my scope of practice, following the College of Naturopaths of Ontario guidelines. Tests are selected based on your individual health needs, and results are reviewed to inform personalized care plans.

Are laboratory tests required for naturopathic care?

No. Laboratory testing is recommended only when it helps clarify health concerns or guide treatment safely and effectively. All testing is performed in compliance with CONO standards, and your care plan may also include lifestyle, nutrition, botanical medicine, and other naturopathic therapies.
